About the Founder Ayaan Jamal

Ayaan Jamal, a student of 11th grade at DPS, RK Puram started “Little Lab” when he was in the 9th grade. He is passionate towards social and educational causes - especially for the less privileged. To scale up his efforts at introducing experiential learning, Ayaan is engaging with the Reach to Teach foundation. This engagement has provided a platform to contribute at the State level across India. He is a volunteer member at the DPS club delving into social issues. His contribution has been acknowledged by the Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi, and the Ladli Foundation.

Ayaan studies Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and English. Ayaan is a jack of all trades and a master of many. Over the years, his leadership skills have secured him positions on his school’s student council and in the Disciplinary Committee. He harbours a strong passion for Mathematics, Physics and Automobiles and is an active member of the Maths, Physics and Automobile clubs at DPS. Furthermore, a quizzing enthusiast, Ayaan loves to hone his general knowledge by participating in multiple inter-school quizzes as part of the Quizzing Society. Also, Ayaan is an accomplished tennis player, who competes at the National level and has won gold medals for his school at the All-India IPSC tennis tournaments. He is also not a stranger to the strings and loves to play the guitar!

Background

Project LittleLab

Seeing is believing, especially when it comes to science. Thus, practical-based scientific education plays a very important role in the learning process. If incorporated into the study of science, practical education can help kids gain an in-depth understanding of the subject matter and the process of scientific inquiry, as well as develop both a deep and broader understanding of scientific concepts. However, we do not have much space in Indian curricula for cultivating such kind of practice-based learning in which theoretical understanding is backed by practical training.

Performing practical work in class can also be challenging. Resources, time, and appropriate space are essential. Many of the science practical education activities are also shaped by safety and health concerns. Consequently, the students are not able to maximize their learning experience. Particularly students from underserved communities may lack access to proper labs and knowledge of scientific experiments and equipment. These kinds of limitations may demotivate students, preventing them from pursuing higher scientific degrees. Project LittleLab seeks to address this issue by facilitating access to practical based knowledge among students from underserved communities.

About Project LittleLab

The LittleLab project is an early-stage STEM learning initiative for underprivileged children in India. By integrating layered educational resources, such as an original curriculum, workshops, practical experimentation kits, as well as a children's book, Project LittleLab strives to create a learning environment that allows students to develop their love for science through an immersive practical training that enables them to understand the scientific study better.

Additionally, Project LittleLab aims to collaborate with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Municipal Council of Delhi (MCD) to install STEM learning mechanisms in government-run primary and middle schools in New Delhi. The project is also currently engaging with NGOs responsible for devising curricula for other State governments, to expand the scope and reach of the project.

Additional Secretary

Ms. Parama Sen, has over two decades of National and Global experience in Public Policy and Finance. She is presently employed as Additional Secretary in the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance engaged with expenditure on critical Government projects. She is also closely associated with policy issues concerning personnel matters of GoI staff. Previously, she has worked as Additional Secretary in Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM), Ministry of Finance, Government of India. She has represented the CAG of India as Auditor of the United Nations

Dr. Naz Perween

Additional Professor

Dr Naz Perween is an additional Professor at the Post Graduate Institute of Child Health, NOIDA. Her profession has enabled close interaction with children across social strata and to their educational needs. She advocates the need to make delivery of education enjoyable through innovative and experiential learning methods.

Sohaib Nasim

MPA-ID candidate

Sohaib is a second year MPA-ID candidate at the Harvard Kennedy School. Prior to joining the programme, Sohaib worked at JPAL South Asia on a research project with Professor Esther Duflo tracking the outcomes of elderly population in the state of Tamil Nadu. For the project he worked with policymakers to leverage insights from the research to influence policy making choices. This past summer, Sohaib worked at the Sovereign team at Moody's Investors Service supporting analysts in the Americas region. Sohaib also holds a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Trichy.
